Thailand Seeks Leadership in ASEAN's Myanmar Diplomacy

Thailand expressed its intention to spearhead Myanmar's reintegration into ASEAN, with Thai Foreign Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow highlighting the need for Myanmar to address ASEAN's concerns. This comes ahead of a significant meeting with Myanmar's new President, Min Aung Hlaing, who has consolidated power following a coup.

The 2021 coup, led by Min Aung Hlaing, ended Myanmar's brief democratic period, resulting in internal chaos and a civil war. ASEAN has since excluded Myanmar's ruling generals from summits, demanding progress on a peace plan involving dialogue and cessation of hostilities.

Despite Myanmar's continued representation at ASEAN meetings, its election and military-backed government remain unrecognized by several nations. Recent prisoner amnesties, including minor sentences reductions for key political figures, have been seen as a positive gesture by ASEAN. However, the path to peace remains challenging, with armed groups refusing to engage in dialogue despite government overtures.
