The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) declared on Wednesday that it will abstain from participating in the upcoming mayoral polls for the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), with the nomination deadline fast approaching.
In the 250-member MCD House, the BJP commands a solid majority with 123 councilors, while AAP holds 101, and the remainder includes members of the Indraprastha Vikas Party, Congress, and independents. Delhi AAP president Saurabh Bharadwaj emphasized that the decision is strategic, intending to highlight the BJP's inability to govern effectively in Delhi.
The elections for mayor, deputy mayor, and three standing committee members will occur on April 29, with the nomination period closing on April 23. This move by AAP not to contest is expected to draw attention to BJP's performance in the city's municipal administration.
