Nepal's Political Shake-Up: Minister Resignation Raises Ethics Concerns
Sudan Gurung, Nepal's Minister of Home Affairs, has resigned amid questions over his investments, becoming the second minister to depart the month-old government. Gurung stressed public trust over position. His actions, including ordering arrests linked to Gen Z protest investigations, have brought public scrutiny on his financial affairs.
Nepal's political landscape faced another shift this week as Sudan Gurung, the Minister of Home Affairs, announced his resignation. Citing questions over his financial investments, Gurung chose ethics over power, stepping down from his position in the month-old government.
Gurung, a prominent figure after initiating the arrest of former PM K.P. Sharma Oli regarding Gen Z protest crackdowns, stated that public concerns over his financial dealings prompted his decision. Despite the lack of specifics, his announcement on social media reiterated his commitment to public trust.
Currently, Prime Minister Balendra Shah, recently elected on a platform of transparency and anti-corruption, will temporarily oversee the Home Ministry. The resignation marks another leadership challenge for Shah, who has already dismissed a labor minister over misconduct.
