Tamil Nadu marked a historic moment as it notched its highest voter turnout ever in the recent assembly elections, with more than 84% of the state's 5.73 crore registered voters turning up at the polls. According to the Election Commission of India, a whopping 84.29% of voters had cast their ballots by 6 PM on Thursday.
This remarkable participation eclipses the previous high of 78.29%, recorded during the 2011 elections, dominated by the AIADMK. The reduced electorate size, from 6.41 crore in October 2025 to 5.73 crore, contributed to this new milestone. Notably, back in 2021, the polls saw around 6.29 crore registrations, which is 56 lakh more than this year.
Districts like Karur and Coimbatore showcased impressive voter engagement, with turnouts of 91.86% and 84.40% respectively. Despite a heated contest in constituencies such as Kolathur and Edappadi, where key figures like DMK President M.K. Stalin and AIADMK's Edappadi K. Palaniswami contested, Chennai's Kolathur saw 85.63% participation.
