He questioned the party's direction, recalling the legacy of revolutionary leader MGR and Jayalalithaa. Semmalai felt increasingly sidelined since Jayalalithaa's passing and has now chosen to step down.
Reflecting on his decades-long association with the AIADMK, Semmalai remembered the numerous opportunities provided by its founders, which allowed him to shine in the political arena. He served as a state minister from 2001 to 2004 and was known for opposing political freebies, advocating for fiscal strength.
