Guatemalan Constitutional Court Shakes Up Attorney General Succession
Guatemala's Constitutional Court has annulled the list of six finalists proposed for the role of attorney general. The list, curated by jurists, notably excluded current Attorney General Consuelo Porras, a controversial figure due to alleged corruption charges and strained relations with President Bernardo Arevalo.
In a significant legal twist, Guatemala's Constitutional Court ordered the annulment of a six-person shortlist for the next attorney general, which was initially defined by a committee of jurists earlier this week.
The development has grabbed attention, particularly because the current Attorney General, Consuelo Porras, was excluded from the list, which effectively rules her out of continuing in the position.
Porras, a figure of considerable controversy and a notable opponent of President Bernardo Arevalo, has faced sanctions from the United States, Canada, the European Union, and others over allegations relating to corruption and undermining Arevalo's electoral success in 2023.
