Trump Threatens Tariffs Over UK Digital Tax Dispute
U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened to impose significant tariffs on the UK if Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not eliminate the digital service tax. This tax targets major American tech firms and has been criticized by Trump as well as former President Joe Biden.
U.S. President Donald Trump has announced his intention to levy substantial tariffs on the United Kingdom if Prime Minister Keir Starmer does not rescind the digital service tax. This declaration was made in an interview with The Telegraph.
The digital service tax, introduced by the UK in 2020, imposes a 2% levy on revenues earned by large tech companies, such as Apple, Google, and Meta. It has faced opposition from Trump, who argues that it unfairly targets American businesses, and from his predecessor Joe Biden.
Trump's warning coincides with an upcoming visit by Britain's King Charles to the U.S., highlighting potential diplomatic tensions between the two countries over economic policies.
