The account, held by Jesse Van Rootselaar, was previously banned by OpenAI in June due to policy violations. However, these issues did not meet OpenAI's internal criteria for alerting authorities. Van Rootselaar is accused of taking the lives of eight individuals at a school in February before her own death.
Altman has communicated with local government officials, including Tumbler Ridge's Mayor Darryl Krakowka and British Columbia Premier David Eby, pledging OpenAI's commitment to collaborate with officials to prevent future tragedies.
