The political landscape saw a significant shift as seven members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the Rajya Sabha joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), following allegations from the Congress that AAP operates as a 'party of billionaires', giving seats in the upper house based on financial exchanges rather than merit.

Senior Congress leader Ajay Maken accused AAP of serving as a proxy for the BJP, particularly in states like Punjab and Gujarat. He claimed that the net worth of these defectors reached a staggering 818,50,35,420, further suggesting monetary motives behind their political migration.

Following the crossover, the BJP's representation in the Upper House increased to 113 members. In response, AAP filed a petition with Rajya Sabha Chairman Radhakrishnan, demanding the disqualification of the seven MPs for abandoning the party's core principles.
