Kolkata was alive with jubilation on assembly poll results night as BJP supporters celebrated their win. Yet, for 70-year-old Kusum Kumari, joy was distant as she stood waiting for a bus home at a major crossing near the Bhabanipur seat.
While saffron-draped vehicles surged past, Kumari, who earns a living through odd jobs, clutched her worn bag tightly, hoping in vain for transport. Fears of unrest during counting had reduced bus frequency significantly, leaving her stranded.
Kumari watched the celebrations unfold around her, pondering why no one offered her a lift. In her solitude, she reflected on the need for kindness and human empathy, values she believes should accompany such political victories.
