Ceasefire Shattered: Russia's Drone Onslaught on Ukraine
Following the expiration of a ceasefire, Russia launched over 200 drones targeting Ukraine, causing damage in numerous regions. Despite efforts from Ukraine to extend the truce, Russia escalated the conflict, hitting civilian infrastructure and causing casualties. The violence continues amidst strained peace efforts.
After the expiration of a US-mediated ceasefire, Russia intensified its assault on Ukraine, launching over 200 drones overnight, according to Ukrainian officials. This escalation followed the unheeded proposal from Ukraine to extend the truce aimed at marking a peaceful commemoration of historic events.
The temporary ceasefire, effective from May 9-11, was linked to the anniversary of the Soviet victory over Nazi Germany in World War Two. This break in hostilities, facilitated by US and President Donald Trump, was intended to foster a peace framework after years of conflict. However, minor skirmishes persisted near frontlines even during the quiet.
President Volodymyr Zelenskiy and Ukrainian officials reported substantial damage in various areas, including Kyiv, where drone debris ignited fires. Attacks targeted civilian infrastructure such as kindergartens and energy facilities, resulting in casualties and widespread material damage across different regions.
