In a landmark decision fostering public welfare, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay announced the closure of 717 government-run TASMAC liquor outlets located within 500 meters of schools, religious places, and bus stands. The decision has been widely lauded, especially by Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) President KM Kader Mohideen, who highlighted the long-standing public agitation over the issue.

KM Kader Mohideen emphasized the significance of the move, stating, "People were agitated because of the presence of these outlets, but for all these years, they were not removed. Vijay has done it, we appreciate it." He also commended Vijay's inclusive political approach, noting his outreach to parties across the political spectrum.

The closure order comes amid Vijay's continued efforts to bolster political relationships within Tamil Nadu, signifying a shift toward prioritizing public welfare over governmental revenue from liquor sales. The TASMAC, though a significant revenue generator, has been under scrutiny following Enforcement Directorate raids concerning alleged financial offenses under PMLA.
