West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari revealed on Friday that an investigation is underway targeting senior police officials, including ex-Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal, following the RG Kar Medical College incident. Speaking in Howrah, Adhikari accused officials of mismanaging the case and confirmed that suspensions have been issued to maintain transparency in the inquiry.
Adhikari explained that the investigation centers on allegations against top police officers like Kolkata CP Vineet Kumar Goyal. There are serious concerns about case mishandling, with reports suggesting attempts to bribe the victim's family, referred to as the Abhaya family. Several senior officials are now suspended to ensure the credibility of the probe, he added.
Those involved, including Vineet Goyal, Indira Mukherjee, and Abhishek Gupta, have all been suspended, as transparency is imperative. Adhikari also announced that the West Bengal Police and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are now taking over the case, following the distressing rape and murder of a 31-year-old female doctor at the RG Kar Medical College on August 9, 2024, which sparked nationwide protests.
