Ballroom Battle: Senate Blocks Funding For Trump's Contested Project
The U.S. Senate's parliamentarian removed funding for President Trump's planned White House ballroom from a spending package. Senate Republicans seek additional taxpayer funds for security upgrades, but Democrats criticize the project as extravagant. The removal complicates Republican efforts, amid criticism over rising costs and a lawsuit challenging the construction.
In a major setback for the Trump administration, the U.S. Senate's parliamentarian, Elizabeth MacDonough, has excluded security funding for President Trump's planned White House ballroom from a crucial spending measure. This decision threatens Republican plans to allocate taxpayer money for the contentious project.
Senate Republicans had proposed $1 billion in taxpayer funding to enhance security measures for the new ballroom. This initiative, however, met fierce opposition from Democrats who criticized the ballroom as an unwarranted extravagance amidst escalating living expenses for Americans.
Despite the parliamentary ruling, Republican legislators might revise the legislation to pursue approval. Amidst political battles, Trump argues that the ballroom would modernize and secure infrastructure at the White House, while a historic preservation lawsuit poses additional challenges to the project's completion.
