Uranium Recovery Revolution: UCIL and Hindustan Copper's Strategic Partnership

The Uranium Corporation of India Ltd (UCIL), a public sector entity under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE), is planning to set up a new recovery plant in Jharkhand. This strategic move, involving a partnership with state-owned Hindustan Copper Ltd, aims to extract uranium from the copper tailings, according to a top official.

In an exclusive interview, Hindustan Copper's CMD, Sanjiv Kumar Singh, disclosed that an agreement has been reached with UCIL. The finely ground waste from copper mining known as tailings, containing small amounts of uranium, will be handed over to UCIL for extraction of uranium, which is critical for nuclear power and defense.

This initiative could significantly boost domestic uranium supplies, aligning with India's nuclear expansion goals. Additionally, the strategy provides dual benefits of resource efficiency and enhanced environmental management, turning waste into a valuable resource, while Hindustan Copper projects significant financial growth and capital expenditure.
