Five persons, including Uttar Pradesh's former state minister Mangeram Kashyap, were on Wednesday released from the Saharanpur district jail, a day after Kairana MP Iqra Hasan protested demanding their release.
A large number of Samajwadi Party (SP) workers and members of the Kashyap community gathered outside the district jail from early Wednesday morning. The released persons were welcomed with flower garlands after they walked out of the jail around 12.30 pm.
The protest by Hasan began around 5 pm on Tuesday at the Sadar Bazar police station, and it continued till about 9.30 pm.
According to officials, Hasan went to meet the DIG in connection with the Monu murder case of Jasala village in Shamli district along with the victim's mother.
Police had allegedly stopped the MP for around 10 minutes at the women's police station due to traffic congestion caused by the parking of her vehicle.
Former minister Mangeram Kashyap, Kashyap Ekta Mission national president Ajay Mehra, state president Anuj Kashyap, Shishpal Kashyap and Satpal Kashyap were booked under charges related to breach of peace and sent to jail for allegedly blocking the road, officials said.
After learning about their arrest, Hasan reached the Sadar Bazar police station and sat on a dharna demanding their release.
Her supporters and SP workers also gathered at the police station after news of the protest spread.
City Magistrate Kuldeep Singh later reached the spot and assured the MP that the process for their release would be completed on Wednesday.
All five were subsequently released from the district jail on Wednesday afternoon, the officials said.
Alleging misbehaviour with SP MP Iqra Hasan by the police, SP president Akhilesh Yadav demanded dismissal of the concerned policemen.
''The police have become a 'corrupt puppet' of the BJP and are equally complicit in the crime of injustice with BJP leaders. But the 'PDA' (Pichde, Dalit, Alpsankhyak, an acronym used by the party for backwards, Dalits and minorities) will neither stop nor bow before the oppression and excesses of the administration,'' he said in a post on X.
He alleged that those in the BJP who make false claims about supporting women's reservation cannot protect or respect ordinary women if they can behave indecently even with a woman MP. The guilty must be dismissed, Yadav added.
