A special meeting convened to consider a no-confidence motion and conduct a floor test against Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC) chairperson Hukheto Yepthomi was cancelled on Thursday following reconciliation among NPF councillors.
Deputy Commissioner of Dimapur Tinojongshi Chang said the administration received a written communication, in which six of the 12 signatories to the no-confidence motion withdrew their support against the DMC chairperson.
After verifying the signatures and finding them genuine, the deputy commissioner cancelled the special meeting scheduled for Friday and treated the no-confidence motion as withdrawn.
The development came a day after DMC councillors announced that they had resolved their differences following the intervention of senior leaders of the Naga People's Front.
In a joint statement, DMC chairperson Hukheto Yepthomi and deputy chairperson Imlinaro Stephanie Ezung said the councillors had decided to reconcile ''in the greater interest of the unity of the party and in the interest of our commitment to serve the public and the citizens of Dimapur city''.
''Having cast aside our differences, we reiterate our commitment to give our best efforts towards our given responsibilities. We are committed to ensuring good governance, accountability and transparency in the functioning of the Dimapur Municipal Council,'' the statement said.
It said that since all members agreed to work together as a united team, there was no longer any need to conduct the trust vote, and the authorities had accordingly been informed to call off the exercise.
The councillors also appealed to the public and stakeholders to extend support and cooperation towards the overall development of Dimapur city.
Earlier, a no-confidence motion against Yepthomi had been moved and endorsed by 12 councillors, including the deputy chairperson, out of the 23 elected members of the council.
