Ending LDF govt's LIFE housing project will be 'cruelty' towards people: CPI (M) state secy

CPI (M) state secretary M V Govindan on Saturday claimed that the UDF government was considering ending the LIFE Mission project, a housing campaign for families without land or homes, and termed the proposed move as an ''extreme cruelty'' towards the people.

Speaking to reporters here, Govindan said that over five lakh people have already got homes under the project, launched in 2016 by the LDF government, and around one lakh houses are in the last stages of construction.

Besides that, lakhs of people are still there in the state who do not have a home, and in these circumstances ending the project will be an ''extreme cruelty'' towards the public, especially the homeless and helpless, he contended.

The LIFE (Livelihood Inclusion and Financial Empowerment) Mission was the Left government's comprehensive housing scheme aimed at providing safe, secure housing for homeless and landless families across the state.

The CPI(M) state secretary said that according to news reports, the concerned minister has said that the intention of the government was not to end the project.

Govindan said that the Left front wants the project to continue and any attempt to stop it will be opposed unitedly by the people of Kerala.
