The main accused in the May 1 murder of a groom in Uttar Pradesh's Jaunpur district was shot dead in an encounter with police early Monday, while a station house officer sustained bullet injuries during the exchange of fire, police said.

The deceased, identified as Ravi Yadav, 23, carried a reward of Rs 1 lakh on his arrest, they said.

According to the police, groom Azad Bind was shot dead on May 1 during his wedding procession in Khetasarai area. Preliminary investigation revealed that the bride's maternal cousin was opposed to the marriage and had allegedly conspired with Ravi Yadav to execute the killing.

Superintendent of Police Kunwar Anupam Singh said the police received information around 2 am about the presence of Ravi Yadav and one of his associates near Rani Ka Mod under Khetasarai.

Acting on the tip-off, teams of the Special Operations Group (SOG), Khetasarai police station and Line Bazar police station jointly cordoned off the area, he said.

According to the SP, Ravi Yadav opened fire upon seeing the police team. In the retaliatory firing by the police, he sustained serious bullet injuries.

He was taken to a hospital where doctors declared him dead, Singh said.

Yadav was a resident of Sondhi village.

During the encounter, Line Bazar SHO K K Singh was also injured after being hit by a bullet allegedly fired by the criminals. He was admitted to the district hospital for treatment, officials said.

The police conducted an extensive combing operation in search of the second accused, who had managed to escape. The SP said the remaining accused would be arrested soon.

An FIR had been registered in the groom's murder case against three named accused on the complaint of the victim's family.
