In a significant move to extend welfare benefits, the Delhi Cabinet has approved raising the annual income eligibility for ration cards under the Public Distribution System from Rs 1.2 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh. The shift is aimed at expanding access to subsidised rations for low-income households previously excluded due to stringent income thresholds, according to an official release.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta's government is also pioneering a new approach to subsidy delivery by planning to implement a Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC)-enabled system. This initiative is expected to deposit financial aid directly into the accounts of beneficiaries, allowing them to purchase rations using digital currencies, thereby promoting transparency and eliminating mismanagement, said Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Minister for Food & Supplies.

The innovative CBDC model seeks to revolutionize the PDS by offering flexibility in choosing authorised outlets, real-time monitoring of subsidy entitlements, and digital accountability. Moreover, it promises an improved framework for audit trails and grievance redressal, reducing disputes while empowering beneficiaries through digital means.
