Several political parties in Tamil Nadu, notably the ruling TVK and opposition DMK, raised objections to the depiction of revered poet Thiruvalluvar dressed in saffron robes during a Lok Bhavan event. Controversy arose when the Governor paid tribute to the portrait in question on May 30, sparking widespread criticism.

Health Minister Arunraaj called the depiction narrow-minded, asserting that Thiruvalluvar's teachings promote a universal outlook. DMK's Udhayanidhi Stalin and CPI(M) leaders pushed back against what they see as a politicization of the poet's image. Udhayanidhi alleged that the Governor's actions emboldened by the TVK government's inaction, have disregarded cultural sensitivity.

Critiques extended to questioning the timing of the event, diverging from Tamil Nadu's traditional celebrations of Thiruvalluvar Day. CPI and MDMK leaders accused the Lok Bhavan of undermining Tamil culture, demanding an apology for the alleged misrepresentation. The incident has lit a fire of dissent, highlighting ongoing cultural and political tensions.
