An uproar ensued in Madhya Pradesh when a BJP legislator honored a notorious dacoit at a ceremony dedicated to Ahilyabai Holkar's legacy. The incident took place in Shivpuri district during a celebration of the famed queen's birth anniversary.
The event, hosted by the Pal-Baghel community of Pichhore town, featured portraits of both Ahilyabai Holkar and the former Chambal dacoit, Rambabu Gadariya. Pichhore's MLA, Pritam Lodhi, who served as the chief guest, garlanded both images, drawing widespread criticism.
Lodhi defended his actions by recalling Gadariya as an acquaintance who shared significant life experiences with him. The MLA expressed that understanding the difficult circumstances that drove Gadariya to crime is crucial, suggesting society bear empathy for such individuals.
Nonetheless, the gesture faced backlash from various community members, who deemed it inappropriate to commemorate a criminal alongside a respected historical figure like Ahilyabai Holkar. Local Congress leader Sahab Singh Kushwah condemned the act, questioning the message it sends to the public.
