Republican television commentator Steve Hilton and Democrat Xavier Becerra emerged as frontrunners in California's open primary gubernatorial race, securing early leads to advance to the November 3 election.

Hilton garnered 27.8% of the vote, while Becerra followed closely with 25.4%, according to official results from all precincts offering partial reports. Though mail-in ballots remain to be counted, democratic billionaire Tom Steyer trails at 19.6%.

Hilton and Becerra would face off in a significant race, with the winner inheriting governance of a $4 trillion economy. Hilton, endorsed by former President Trump, highlights his British origins, expressing honor at the support.
