The ICAR-National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) in Bhopal has achieved a prestigious recognition. It has been designated as a Category A Rinderpest Holding Facility by the World Organisation for Animal Health (WOAH) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
This designation, announced during WOAH's 92nd General Session in Paris, highlights India's prominent role in global animal health and biosecurity. Alka Upadhyaya, Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying, received the certificate on behalf of India, positioning the country as one of only six in the world with such a facility.
The ICAR-NIHSAD's recognition is a testament to its robust biosafety protocols and readiness to manage emergencies. Such facilities are vital in containing the Rinderpest Virus-Containing Material, ensuring it remains secure to prevent any future outbreaks.
