Greece will deploy over 170 extra firefighters to Chios on Monday as persistent wildfires continue to wreak havoc for a second consecutive day, intensified by strong winds that have led to power outages and the evacuation of local inhabitants.

The Greek government spokesperson, Pavlos Marinakis, revealed at a news conference that these additional forces would supplement the efforts of approximately 190 firefighters already operating on the island. They are supported by 11 aircraft in a bid to prevent the flames from engulfing homes and traditionally significant mastiha-producing areas.

The ongoing wildfires pose a serious threat to forest and pasture lands, advancing dangerously close to Chios town, the island's capital. This scenario unfolds against a backdrop of rising concern as Greece increasingly faces the adverse effects of climate change, prompting extensive investments in fire management and prevention efforts.
