A golden jackal tragically lost its life after being struck by a speeding vehicle near the DPS Flamingo Lake in Nerul, Navi Mumbai. The incident happened around midnight on Sunday, according to statements from a forest official on Monday.
Witnesses and the Wildlife Welfare Association (WWA) confirmed that the collision involved a four-wheeler, and the jackal succumbed to its injuries on the spot. The forest department's mangrove cell has since taken charge of the jackal's remains, with plans to appropriately dispose of them at their Ghansoli facility.
Environmentalists have voiced concerns over the preservation of this delicate ecosystem, as the surrounding mangroves and lake are part of a conservation reserve. These areas are crucial habitats for local and migratory wildlife, including other jackals, birds, and reptiles, highlighting the importance of maintaining buffer zones.
