The Union Ministry of Environment's committee has returned a proposal from Andhra Pradesh concerning the Polavaram-Banakacherla link project. The decision stems from the need for a thorough assessment of floodwater availability in collaboration with the Central Water Commission (CWC).

During a meeting on June 17, the Expert Appraisal Committee (EAC) received several representations alleging the proposed scheme might breach the Godavari Water Disputes Tribunal Award of 1980. The EAC emphasized the importance of the AP government consulting the CWC on inter-state issues before proceeding.

Despite Andhra's chief minister, N Chandrababu Naidu, advocating the project for drought alleviation, Telangana has opposed it, citing potential negative impacts. The project's estimated cost has reached Rs 81,900 crores, aiming to provide both drinking water and agricultural aid.
