Out of Control: Firefighters Battle Ferocious Blaze on Crete
Hundreds of firefighters are combating a massive wildfire on Crete island, Greece, sparked by strong winds, burning forests and olive groves, and displacing over 1,000 people. No injuries have been reported, but respiratory issues arose among evacuees. The fire emphasizes the vulnerability of the region to destructive wildfires.

ATHENS, July 3 (Reuters) – Over 230 firefighters along with aerial support have been deployed to tackle a fierce wildfire on Crete island, Greece, officials reported Thursday. The blaze, fueled by gale-force winds, engulfed vast areas of forest and olive groves, necessitating the evacuation of more than 1,000 residents and tourists.
The fire, near Ierapetra's southeastern coast, reached several homes and hotels, causing damage but no reported injuries. Evacuees have been sheltered temporarily, while some have left the island. A local official indicated respiratory issues among some evacuees due to thick, grey smoke engulfing the area.
This wildfire season proves challenging with July being notoriously difficult due to high temperatures and strong winds. Greece and its Mediterranean neighbors face increasing wildfire threats as climate conditions change, intensifying fire occurrences and their destructive impacts on human settlements and natural landscapes.
