Port Blair Shines at Swachh Survekshan 2024-25 with Special Category Award

In a remarkable achievement, Port Blair has been honored with the 'Special Category Award – Promising Swachh Shehar' at the 9th Swachh Survekshan 2024-25. The accolade was awarded by the Union Minister of Housing and Urban Affairs, Manohar Lal, during a grand ceremony at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi, on July 17.
Acknowledging the city's commitment to cleanliness, S. Shahul Hameed, the chairperson of the Port Blair Municipal Council (PBMC), along with Azharuddin Zahiruddin Quazi, IAS Secretary of PBMC, received the award. Port Blair, categorized as a medium-sized city, scored 72.27% in the survey covering various sectors including households, schools, and waste management facilities.
This award marks a significant milestone for Port Blair, noted for its improvement in the national rankings to 99th from 162nd among Urban Local Bodies. The city also achieved its first-ever Open Defecation Free++ certification and a 3-Star Garbage Free City rating, reflecting its dedication to environmental sustainability.
