The government of Tamil Nadu has taken a pioneering step by establishing India's inaugural Centre of Excellence for Hornbill Conservation, situated at the Anamalai Tiger Reserve. This initiative is aimed at protecting the ecologically crucial hornbill species native to the Asian tropics, marking a significant milestone in wildlife conservation efforts.
Hornbills, known for their role as seed dispersers, are crucial to the regeneration of tropical forests. However, their populations are declining due to habitat degradation and climate change. Tamil Nadu's new facility is dedicated to reversing this trend through targeted conservation strategies, which include scientific research, habitat restoration, community engagement, and international collaboration.
The Anamalai Tiger Reserve, renowned for safeguarding endangered species, is set to become a hub for hornbill conservation under this initiative. The project has received a funding of Rs one crore from the Endangered Species Conservation Corpus Fund, establishing Tamil Nadu as a leader in biodiversity conservation.
