Himachal Pradesh has experienced a surge in natural disasters, witnessing 148 cloudbursts, 294 flash floods, and over 5,000 landslides since 2018. These incidents have left regions like Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kinnaur, and Mandi especially vulnerable, officials reported on Thursday.

During a presentation to the Multi-Sectoral Central Team (MSCT), Special Secretary (Revenue-Disaster Management) D C Rana presented these alarming statistics. Chairing the meeting, Additional Chief Secretary (Revenue) K K Pant emphasized the necessity for institutions like the Central Water Commission (CWC) and the Geological Survey of India (GSI) to conduct detailed research on these disasters. Pant pointed out the critical importance of identifying disaster-prone areas and prioritizing proactive forecasting and pre-disaster strategies to reduce casualties and property damage. He also called for advanced sensor installations to enhance data collection.

Meanwhile, heavy rains caused the closure of 275 roads, including a National Highway, in Himachal Pradesh by Thursday evening. Mandi district alone reported 165 road closures, while power transformers and water supply systems were disrupted across the state. Since June 20, the monsoon has claimed 79 lives and left 34 missing, triggering 42 flash floods, 25 cloudbursts, and 28 landslides, resulting in a loss of around Rs 1,387 crore, stated the State Emergency Operation Centre (SEOC).
