In an unprecedented move this monsoon, five out of the total 30 gates of the Sardar Sarovar Dam at Ekta Nagar, Gujarat, have been opened to maintain water levels, according to officials. This decision follows a significant water inflow from upstream regions.
The Sardar Sarovar Narmada Nigam Ltd (SSNNL) announced that gates were elevated to a height of two meters at 11 am Thursday. This occurred after the dam's water level increased by 2.71 centimeters within 24 hours, attributed to rainfall in the Narmada basin and releases from Omkareshwar dam in Madhya Pradesh.
Sitting near the Statue of Unity in Narmada district, the dam is currently receiving 4.22 lakh cusecs of water, with approximately 85,000 cusecs being released into the river. Additional releases include 4,100 cusecs into the Narmada canal. An alert has been issued for downstream villages as water discharge continues.
