The Goa government is actively pursuing advanced coastal protection strategies, among them the pioneering use of 'sand motor technology', to counteract significant beach erosion in Arambol, Pernem Taluka. This announcement was made by Environment Minister Aleixo Sequeira in the state Assembly, highlighting a collaborative approach involving national and international expertise.
The initiative, sparked by heavy monsoons that have led to extensive sand loss, aims to preserve the local ecosystems, support fishermen, and sustain tourism. Notable among these protective measures is the potential replacement of traditional seawalls with beach nourishment solutions explored in partnership with Netherlands-based Deltares. The Minister emphasized the focus on environmentally sustainable alternatives to hard coastal structures.
Furthermore, the Water Resources Department's comprehensive shoreline study under the National Hydrology Project is progressing in tandem with local plans for khazan land, mangrove, and turtle nesting conservation. CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography has also been instrumental in drafting an Ecologically Sensitive Areas Management Plan to ensure the protection of vital marine habitats.
