EU Urged to Strengthen Stance in US Trade Talks
German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil calls for a stronger European Union in trade negotiations with the US. Ahead of talks with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Klingbeil stresses the need for quick resolutions and advocates for a quota system on steel exports amid ongoing tariff discussions.

German Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil has voiced the need for the European Union to adopt a stronger stance in its trade negotiations with the United States. Speaking in Washington ahead of a meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Klingbeil highlighted the need for clarity on the recent trade deal struck between the two entities.
Klingbeil asserted the importance of building self-confidence in EU dealings, emphasizing dialogue rather than confrontation with the U.S. He suggested a quick resolution to the trade conflict is necessary, ensuring companies the planning certainty they require for future operations.
The agenda with Secretary Bessent includes addressing tariffs and the influx of cheaper Chinese goods into Western markets. Klingbeil hopes to advocate for mechanisms like a quota system for steel as part of continuing negotiations, acknowledging the complexities within sectors such as steel and aluminium, still subject to hefty tariffs.
