The government in Meghalaya has announced the beginning of the land acquisition process for the Rs 23,000 crore Shillong-Silchar high-speed corridor. Officials report that this greenfield project will enhance road infrastructure and boost connectivity with the Barak Valley in Assam. This 166.8-km corridor will have 144.8 km within Meghalaya.
Spanning four districts—Ri-Bhoi, East Khasi Hills, West Jaintia Hills, and East Jaintia Hills—the project aims to improve transportation significantly. In East Khasi Hills, the villages of Mawsiatkhnam, Lumkseh, and others have been notified. Similarly, 17 villages in Ri-Bhoi and 13 in West Jaintia Hills are under consideration for the project.
The most significant notices have been issued in East Jaintia Hills, targeting 34 villages. The National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd is in charge of execution. Once the project is completed, it is anticipated to reduce travel times and promote trade and tourism between Shillong and Silchar.
