This year's summer marked a dangerous new chapter for Spain as it became the hottest on record since 1961, according to state weather agency AEMET. The summer of 2025 hit 2.1°C above the 1991-2020 average and exceeded the previous record set in 2022 by 0.1°C.

Ruben del Campo from AEMET highlighted the increasing frequency of these heat events, saying that nine of the last ten hottest summers have been in the 21st century. He warned that the extreme conditions experienced in recent years could become the norm.

Not only did the high temperatures contribute to the devastating wildfires, but they also signaled the urgent need for both local and global climate action. Spain recorded a 16-day heatwave in August, with southern regions experiencing temperatures over 45°C.
