Netherlands at Risk of Missing 2030 Climate Goals
The Dutch government's climate adviser reports that current policies are insufficient to meet the Netherlands' 2030 climate goal of a 55% reduction in CO2 emissions. Current policies may only achieve a 45-53% reduction. There is also concern about the lack of plans for post-2030 emissions reductions.

The Netherlands is facing the possibility of falling short of its ambitious climate targets for 2030, according to the nation's chief climate policy adviser. The country's existing measures may not suffice to achieve the desired 55% reduction in CO2 emissions from 1990 levels by the end of the decade.
Expert analysis indicates that under the current framework, emissions are expected to decrease by only 45% to 53%, indicating a substantial gap between policy aspirations and expected outcomes. The nation had already achieved a 37% reduction by the previous year, but progress has been slow in recent years.
In addition to the 2030 target concerns, the climate adviser also highlighted a lack of strategic plans for further emission reductions post-2030, despite the overarching European Union ambition of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
