In India's eastern hill region of Darjeeling, relentless rain has unleashed deadly floods and landslides, claiming at least 18 lives after demolishing homes, roads, and bridges, authorities report. Tragedy has also struck neighboring Nepal, where the death toll has climbed to 50.

As relief efforts commence, officials in India's West Bengal state caution that the death toll may rise as more information emerges from remote locales. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee reported the collapse of iron bridges and the inundation of vast land tracts, devastating the districts of Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar, known for their tea plantations.

With more heavy rainfall expected, transportation has been severely disrupted. The collapse of a bridge over the Balason River has cut off highway access between Siliguri and Mirik. Debris-laden roads hinder rescue operations, while the tourist hotspot of Darjeeling, famous for its tea and views of Mount Kanchenjunga, remains in crisis.
