Record Rise: Immigration in The EU Reaches 64.2 Million
The number of immigrants in the European Union hit a record 64.2 million in 2025, up 2.1 million from the previous year. Germany leads as the largest host, while Spain exhibited the fastest growth. Migration is uneven across the EU, with key concentration in Germany, Spain, Italy, and France.
A recent report from the Centre for Research and Analysis on Migration at RFBerlin reveals that the European Union's immigrant population soared to a historic peak of 64.2 million in 2025, marking an increase of 2.1 million compared to the previous year.
Germany continues to be the primary destination, housing nearly 18 million foreign-born individuals, 72% of whom are of working age. Meanwhile, Spain saw the most rapid growth, adding approximately 700,000 immigrants to reach a total of 9.5 million.
The study highlights uneven migration patterns throughout the EU, with Luxembourg, Malta, and Cyprus experiencing the highest immigrant shares relative to their populations. Asylum claims are primarily concentrated in Spain, Italy, France, and Germany, with Germany also hosting the largest number of refugees, at 2.7 million.
