Mass Demolition Drive Targets Illegal Riverbank Settlements in Kathmandu
Nepal's government initiated a large-scale demolition of illegal settlements along the Bagmati River in Kathmandu. Hundreds of structures, occupied by landless settlers, were removed to facilitate urban beautification. The initiative, led by the Federal Government and supported by local authorities, promises alternative housing solutions for affected families.
Nepal's government has embarked on a massive demolition drive, targeting illegal structures built by landless settlers along the Bagmati River's banks in Kathmandu's Thapathali and Gairegaun areas. The operation is part of a broader plan to enhance the city's aesthetics and restore the river's banks.
The joint effort, orchestrated by the Federal Government under Balendra Shah's leadership, alongside Kathmandu Metropolitan City, utilized the Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and Metropolitan Police personnel. Families affected by the demolitions have been relocated to temporary shelters, like Dasharath Stadium and Kirtipur Municipality.
This initiative contrasts with past efforts and promises alternative land and rehabilitation for displaced settlers, marking a coordinated move towards the city's comprehensive redevelopment. Additional demolitions are slated for Shantinagar and Gaushala as the city continues its transformation efforts.
