In a notable acknowledgment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded Chhattisgarh's blackbuck conservation efforts during his 'Mann Ki Baat' broadcast, describing the program as a beacon of biodiversity restoration. The state's initiative, spearheaded by the forest department since 2018, has successfully reintroduced over 200 blackbucks in the Barnawapara Wildlife Sanctuary.
The program, which began with the translocation of 77 blackbucks from zoological parks, has evolved into a significant wildlife conservation success. The state, once devoid of blackbucks, now sees a thriving population that stands as a testament to effective conservation strategies and habitat management.
This achievement has not only bolstered regional ecological diversity but also attracted political discourse. Former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel questioned PM Modi's praise by referencing Salman Khan's infamous blackbuck hunting incident, sparking nuance on the PM's conservationist stance. The conservation strategy looks to expand into additional sanctuaries, aiming to further cement this initiative as a national model.
