Nearly 90 people have lost their lives in a destructive storm that swept across Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state. The intense weather event, marked by heavy rains and hail, also left 53 individuals injured, the state disaster management office stated on Thursday.
Such storms are not uncommon in the region during the sweltering season stretching from March to June, prior to the onset of monsoon rains. On Wednesday, the severe weather culminated in the deaths of 89 residents, according to a post by Uttar Pradesh's relief commissioner.
The catastrophic event also resulted in the devastation of 87 houses, the deaths of 114 livestock, and widespread disruption, as winds uprooted trees and billboards, which landed on vehicles and roadside stalls. Authorities have been instructed by the state's chief minister to expedite aid distribution and support for those affected.
