A severe storm wreaked havoc in Uttar Pradesh, India's most populous state, claiming the lives of over 100 people, officials reported on Thursday. The state government, led by Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, promised quick distribution of relief funds.
The storm, striking during the state's pre-monsoon season, injured 59 individuals, demolished 87 homes, and took the lives of 114 animals, according to state authorities. The most affected region was around the Hindu pilgrimage city, Prayagraj.
Eyewitnesses described terrifying scenes as strong winds hurled hoardings, signboards, and coal dust through the air. Television footage showed uprooted trees and debris scattered across streets, while reports came in of falling trees and weakening structures causing fatalities.
