The Environment Ministry has announced significant changes in the National Biodiversity Authority (NBA) appointments, with new members selected on an annual rotational basis. The recent appointees hail from the State Biodiversity Boards (SBBs) of Madhya Pradesh, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, and Odisha.
This shift follows the previous tenure of representatives from Rajasthan, Arunachal Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territory Council of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The NBA, established in 2003, operates as a statutory body under the Environment Ministry and specializes in regulating and advising on the conservation and sustainable use of biological resources.
Additionally, the authority includes a chairperson, 16 ex officio members from various ministries, five non-official members, a member-secretary, and the four rotational representatives from state boards. These appointments are intended to ensure fair and equitable sharing of benefits arising from the use of biological resources.
