The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) convened its 28th full meeting to address rising stubble burning cases in Punjab and Haryana. From April 1 to May 15, Punjab reported 8,986 incidents, up from 6,474 last year, while Haryana saw 3,290 cases, compared to 1,503 the previous year.
The commission called for stringent enforcement measures from state governments and responsible agencies. Additionally, enhancements to the Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) network across Delhi-NCR are planned, with 46 new stations proposed, raising the total to 157.
Further, CAQM set greening and plantation targets for NCR and Delhi for 2026-27, stressing the need for consistent follow-up. The ambitious goal of planting 4.60 crore trees and shrubs underscores the commission's dedication to combating air pollution in the region.
