In response to a potential outbreak of the Babesia virus, authorities in Gujarat are taking precautionary measures by isolating lions living within a 10-kilometer radius of affected zones in Gir Somnath and Amreli. The move follows the suspected virus-related deaths of four lion cubs.
The forest department, spearheaded by Arjun Modhwadia, is collaborating with Junagadh Veterinary College to implement these preventative actions. Additional tick-removal efforts and medical protocols are underway, while results from samples sent for analysis are awaited. Emergency preparedness has been enhanced, including specially prepared equipment for potential lion rescues.
