In Gujarat, officials have taken swift action to isolate lions in a 10-km radius around zones where a suspected Babesia infection has resulted in the deaths of lion cubs. State minister Arjun Modhwadia confirmed the measure was undertaken in Gir Somnath and Amreli districts as a preventive step.

The deaths, potentially caused by Babesia—a tick-borne disease, prompted the involvement of experts from Junagadh Veterinary College. While awaiting examination results of deceased cubs, containment efforts are in focus to halt any virus spread.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel addressed the situation with high-level directives, supported by input from the Prime Minister's Office. Measures extend to intensified tick-removal procedures in Gir Sanctuary and its environs. The forest department is ready to act if infections occur, with emergency plans and logistical resources on standby.

The lion hospital at Sasan, uncompromised by infections, bolsters its facilities, including tranquiliser preparedness and diagnostic tech, to manage potential cases swiftly.
