Parimal Nathwani has pressed the central and Gujarat state governments to establish emergency healthcare facilities for Asiatic lions at Gir Sanctuary. This comes following the death of two cubs from a potential Babesia infection.
Nathwani's appeal to Union Minister Bhupender Yadav and state Minister Arjun Modhwadia emphasized the need for swift measures to control any viral threats within the sanctuary. Although Modhwadia has dismissed the likelihood of a widespread outbreak, Nathwani insists on caution due to the increased lion population.
He advocated for the 'Field Observation Protocol' for wildlife management professionals, aiming for improved surveillance of the lions. Nathwani also highlighted the importance of vaccinating street dogs to prevent CDV transmission, which can threaten the lion population.
