Monsoon Rainfall in India Predicted Below Average, IMD Reports

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has revised its monsoon forecast for the upcoming season, projecting below-average rainfall across India. This year's southwest monsoon is expected to bring only 90% of the long-period average rainfall.

Northeast India is likely to receive normal amounts of rain, though most other regions should prepare for less precipitation. IMD Director of Meteorology stated that the agricultural zones in particular may face reduced rainfall, necessitating contingency plans. Union Agriculture Minister advised states to brace for unfavorable weather conditions and assured that essential resources are available ahead of the Kharif sowing season.

The monsoon, expected to start seven days later than initially predicted, will begin its progression from the southern regions. Meanwhile, El Nino conditions, associated with reduced rainfall, are anticipated to strengthen towards the end of the monsoon period.

The IMD also highlighted the likelihood of a significant rise in temperature across several states. Heatwave conditions might be severe in areas such as Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Odisha, whereas Rajasthan and Jharkhand might experience fewer heatwave days than usual.
