The Sports Authority of India (SAI) has taken a firm stance on ensuring accountability among tennis players who receive financial support through various schemes. According to a new directive, these athletes are required to prioritize playing for India in international events.
The SAI's order mandates that players benefiting from the Target Asian Games Group (TAGG), among other support schemes, must sign an undertaking confirming their obligation to represent India. Failure to do so without valid justification may lead to the recovery of funds provided.
The directive comes in response to past instances where players declined to participate in events like the Davis Cup. The move aims to boost India's international sports prestige, and it has been welcomed by national team captains Rohit Rajpal and Vishal Uppal.
